On Consistency

On Consistency

I took a walk yesterday night after receiving my hardcopy of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. It’s been sometime since I  last went through it and I realise how far I am from the ideal Roman man. It is a good reminder for myself that deliberate and consistent practice is important to build something up. And also to know that even the most stoic of men may have their bad days.

Some tips I’ve found to help myself stay consistent:
– Create an environment where I am likelier to follow my routine rather than to rely on mental strength. Mental strength and determination can be exhaustive and unreliable at times. Do not underestimate the power of external reinforcement.

Example : A personal trainer/teacher keeps one accountable , besides impacting wisdom and skills.

‘ Not to feel exasperated, or defeated, or despondent because your days aren’t packed with wise and moral actions. But to get back up when you fail, to celebrate behaving like a human — however imperfectly — and fully embrace the pursuit that you’ve embarked on.’ – Marcus Aurelius
